While reminiscing about Super Rugby in its pomp, Swys de Bruin explained why the All Blacks are at a disadvantage compared to the Springboks.
De Bruin was speaking during a conversation with Victor Matfield and Gcobani Bobo on SuperSport’s Side Entry show.
The subject of Super Rugby was raised, with both De Bruin and Matfield looking back fondly on when South Africa was involved in the tournament during its days as Super 12.
However, De Bruin said that South Africa’s move to align with the northern hemisphere with the URC, while keeping roots in the southern hemisphere with the Rugby Championship, has worked out best to make use of the widely spread player base.
The former Springbok assistant coach added that new All Blacks coach Scott Robertson has a problem by comparison, as New Zealand Rugby prevents him from selecting players based outside the country.
“[Super 12] was special, but it’s different. It’s totally different now,” De Bruin explained.
“What’s happened now, is by far the best for us. The Springboks still play the All Blacks, but we are now suddenly getting the whole spectrum. So when we prepare for the next World Cup, our boys have played all the styles.
“[New Zealand] has a problem. That poor Razor Robertson has his back against the wall. Their unions have made the decision that he can’t pick outside players. You need the best players to play for you.
“There are over 100 New Zealand players playing overseas and they say back home that they can’t play for the All Blacks, if you aren’t playing for one of the franchises. I don’t care too much about them, because it’s their own fault.
“For us, the best thing happened. If you ask Rassie and them, they will tell you that the system that we’ve got now is perfect. In the big picture, you can’t find it better.”
