Golfweek magazine names Delaware’s top 5 public golf courses. Here’s the list

If you want to tee up at Delaware’s best public-access golf courses, you’re going to want to head downstate.

That’s the advice from Golfweek, which named Delaware’s top public golf courses with four of the top-ranked five found in Sussex County.

The magazine’s annually updated “Best Courses You Can Play” ranking was released earlier this month, judged by its nationwide network of raters.

“The hundreds of members of our course-ratings panel continually evaluate courses and rate them on 10 criteria on a points basis of 1 through 10. They also file a single, overall rating on each course. Those overall ratings are averaged to produce all our Golfweek’s ‘Best Course’ rankings,” according to the list.

The best public-access courses are also listed for all other U.S. states by the magazine, which, like The News Journal/Delaware Online, is part of the USA Today Network.

Here are Delaware’s top courses, according to Golfweek’s members:

The 6,661-yard course, which first opened in 2007 and completed its complete 18-hole construction in 2020, offers tee times for both the public and members.

The first Jack Nicklaus Signature Course in Delaware, it measures 7,525 yards from the signature tee and first opened in 2005.

Baywood Green features a pair of nine-hole courses dubbed Woodside and Waterside with five sets of tee boxes ranging from 3,539 to 6,983 yards. It was built in 1998 and first opened with nine holes.

The 7,007-yard, Arthur Hills/Steve Forest & Associates-designed course opened in 2005 next to Delaware Park.

Designed by former Jack Nicklaus associate Rick Jacobson, Bear Trap Dunes offers 27 holes across three sets of 9-hole courses appropriately named the Grizzly, Kodiak and Black Bear.
