The electric car racing series Extreme E has announced it is changing to feature hydrogen-powered cars from next year.
The new series, which will now be called Extreme H, will start in April 2025 and will see 10 rounds of racing taking place across five locations.
Organisers said the races are “the future of sustainable motorsport”.
Previously the races have featured all-electric vehicles but they will now be powered by hydrogen fuel cells.
“Venturing into hydrogen is a really exciting prospect for our series,” said former rally star driver Carlos Sainz Sr, who is the co-founder of the Acciona | Sainz XE team in the championship.
F1 world championship winners Nico Rosberg, Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton have all backed teams since the championship launched in 2021.
Extreme H will begin in Saudi Arabia, before heading to the UK, Germany and Italy, and will finish up in the USA.
The teams for the 2025 season are expected to be announced soon.
In 2019, Formula 1 launched a plan to become carbon neutral by 2030.
