The U.S. Open typically has the second-smallest finishing field among the four major championships of the year. The cut of the top 60 players and ties moving on after Round 2 at Pinehurst No. 2 ranks behind only the Masters (top 50 players and ties) for the smallest field.

After the first round, 64 players were at 2-over or better, making the projected cut line relatively low. But that projection has changed multiple times over the second day of action at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club.

Here’s the latest on the projected cut line and who could see their tournament end today.

2024 U.S. Open projected cut line

Dozens of golfers still haven’t finished the front nine of Round 2, making the cut line still dynamic as of 4:30 p.m. ET. At time of publishing, the projected cut line is 5-over compared to the 2-over mark following the first round.

That projection’s moved between 5-and 4-over throughout much of the afternoon. It will likely continue to change as the majority of the field concludes the round.

Will Tiger Woods make the U.S. Open cut?

Through the front nine, Woods is right on the cusp of missing the cut. A 4-over-74 in Round 1 did not set him up well for Friday’s action. So far, he’s at 1-over for Round 2, putting him right on the edge.

Woods had four bogeys in the back nine yesterday. Another couple today could have him miss the cut.

Who could miss the 2024 U.S. Open cut?

The biggest name in danger of missing the cut today is World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. He was the overwhelming favorite coming into Pinehurst but a tough Round 2 could see him miss the cut for the first time since the 2022 St. Jude Championship. He finished Round 1 with a 1-over-71 but a double-bogey 7 at the par-5 5th hole put him in a tough spot. With his day completed, he’s at 5-over and is at risk of missing the cut.

A couple of other top-ranked golfers are also at risk of missing the cut after a rough outing in Round 2:

A few other notable golfers are, barring a massive surprise, all but certainly missing the cut for the 2024 U.S. Open, including:

  • World No. 5 Viktor Hovland (+9)

  • World No. 10 Max Homa (+6)

  • World No. 21 Jason Day (+8)

  • Phil Mickelson (+12)
